LaTreice V. Branson, 26, is a native of Indian Head, Maryland. Her early art career began while attending The Philadelphia High School for Girls where she printed her first photograph in her 10th grade photography class. The first camera she used was given to her by father and later she received her first photography kit by her Grandmother. LaTreice never knew that her Grandmother had served as a photographer in the government in Washington, DC., and this information sparked her interest in the medium, reading books and learning all she could about the photographic process.
While attending Cheyney University of Pennsylvania on scholarship in the Keystone Honor’s Academy, LaTreice sought after the Fine Art Major after completing the Communication Arts program. It was in the basement of Vaux Logan Hall that she completed her first fine art series. During her tenure at Cheyney University, she served as founding President of the National Education Division Art Education Association Fine Art Honor Society, member of the Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society and the Toastmasters International Success Leadership Program. LaTreice also served two terms as Miss Cheyney University and was awarded several honors including: Excellence in art, Drum Major Commitment to Students Award, National Federation of Black Women Business Owners Scholarship, James A Hughes Memorial Scholarship, 2 Who’s Who Among American College Students Awards, Ed Bradley Excellence In Communications, National College Minority Leadership Honors, National Collegiate Communication Arts Honors, United States Achievement Academy membership and Collegiate All-American Scholar. LaTreice finished her career at Cheyney University as the Valedictorian of her graduating class with a BA in Fine Art and a BA in Communications. She decided to attend The Ohio State University on Fellowship in pursuit of her Masters of Fine Art in photography.
During her tenure at OSU, LaTreice served as a Graduate Teaching Associate in the Department of Art where she taught black and white darkroom photography, color photography and digital photography classes. She graduated with her MFA in 2007, and was the first to complete the GISFA ( Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Fine Art) Program. Since, LaTreice has taught as a Lecturer at The Ohio State University, Art-in-Residence at Village Academy Schools and as Adjunct Faculty at Columbus State Community College. Now it is with great joy that LaTreice has returned home to Cheyney University of Pennsylvania as a Professor in the Department of Humanities
and Communication Arts. She continues to work closely with the Arts Exchanges on International Issues For Tanzania in conjunction with the Great Lakes Consortium for International Training and Development to aid women in pursuing their goals through education, empowerment and business development.
LaTreice’s commitment to academic excellence and her never-ending passion for art has allowed her to exhibit and perform throughout Tanzania and the US. In 2007, LaTreice was honored to have her self-portrait published on the cover of “Other Heroes: African American Comic Book Creators, Characters and Archetypes”. Five of her other self-portrait are now in permanent collections at The Ohio State University at the Ohio Union and at the Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center. Recently, LaTreice was published in the Madison Who’s Who Among Executives and Professionals Honors Edition.
